Progress on the AHOD360 Audiovisual Terminology Database

Aug 23, 2024

The All Hands on Deck 360 project is pleased to share significant progress on the European Audiovisual Shipwright Multilingual Terminology Database, initiated in the autumn of 2023. Since then, our partners have been meticulously collecting and translating shipwright-specific terms into five key languages: German, English, Spanish, Italian, and French.

This database aims to provide a comprehensive resource for the boatbuilding industry by offering precise translations and definitions of terms, each accompanied by synonyms and definitions.

So far, we have gathered 1,300 terms across a broad range of thematic areas, including Ships and vessels, Parts of a ship, Rigging, Knots and ropes, Materials, Tools, Instruments, Seamanship, Oceanography & Hydrography, Modern Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, and Maritime law. Additionally, we have focused on specific terms related to Shipwrights.

We have now refined this selection to 1,000 essential terms.

In our commitment to enhancing the usability and understanding of these terms, we have recently embarked on an important phase of the project. Our partners are currently searching for relevant images, detailed descriptions, and voice notes to accompany each term, ensuring a more comprehensive and engaging learning experience.

From the intricacies of a keel to the complexities of rigging, every aspect of shipwright craftsmanship is being meticulously documented. Our aim is to create a thorough database that captures the essence of maritime construction, providing users with a rich array of fundamental industry terms.
