Material databses play crucial role especially when it comes to design or engineering. They provide specific information about wood species and their properties and even give some info on allergens, toxicity – or sustinability. So one can discover lesser-known but remarkable wood types. Thanks for the good link!

Technolgy could replace much work of a shipwright BUT: when all work is being done by robots, computers and other new technolgy: who can pay for the boats he was able to build? Everybody workless with no or little pay ….
And this is true for many, many other workers …. -

One website (of many) to search for good boatbuilding woods could be: https://www.wood-database.com/.
In the search box enter <boatbuilding > and wait.
How serious this search engine works?
I think every language has its own wood species websites, but if one can select <boatbuilding> I am not sure. -

– availability, recourses in your country and internationally …..
– best practices are often expensive so prices may be considered …..
– what part of the boat …..
– must it be straight or curved …..
– is it for tradition…[Read more] -

If you buy a used sailboat for refurbishing, there are a few things you have to check in order to know which parts will need replacing. Of course check for leaks, but as well for soft spots !
Especially around chain plates, stanchions, mast tabernacle, cleats, and anything that “pierces” the deck, where water can stagnate. Take a small hard object…[Read more] -

A nice video on the building of a Dinghy Sail boat, only using common power tools. It’s still a “modest” project, but it shows the steps and first principles of boat making.
Plus, if anyone wants to learn how to sail while learning how to build sailboats, a dinghy is definitely the best way to start both. -

If anyone from the north of France is starting a ship restauration/refurbishment project, but doesn’t have nor the space, the tools, or the knowledge to get started, take a look at the maritime conservatory of Le Havre (Normandy).
There you can propose your project, rent a spot on their workshop, have access…[Read more]-
