    It was not until the 17th century that the first metal constructions began, during the industrial revolution the first artificial dry docks were created with bricks, while plastic materials and glass fibre or carbon fibre composites with epoxy resins began in the 20th century.

    The 20th century also saw the development of techniques for epoxidising wood, which made it more durable and resistant, and opened the way for new wooden shipbuilding.
